Thus, it can be proposed that the inhibition of testosterone-induced activation aromatase enzyme is one mechanism for the inhibition of hair growth by progesterone. However, an inhibitory effect of progesterone has only been demonstrated in mice at the molecular level (Bertrani et al., 2004).
Progesterone also inhibits the activation of androgen receptor (AR) by 5α-reductase, in vitro as well vivo with concentrations low as 9 nmol/l (Ricciardelli et al., 2010). In contrast to progesterone, treatment with anandamide (AEA) reduces the serum concentration of free testosterone and the androgenic hormones, its antiandrogen effects are mediated via its interaction with CB1 receptors (Chang et al., 1999).
DHT is one of the most important androgens in male body. Its binding is mediated by 5α-reductase in the skin cells, and it increases the release accumulation of androgens, androgens and testosterone precursors in the male genital tract. DHT also inhibits the enzyme 5α-reductase, which is involved in a number of steroid biosynthetic steps (Fisch et al., 1994; Fisch 2012).
